I was on the acai berry way before Oprah made it popular. Back when I was a wee little freelance copy editor, I’d swig bottles of acai juice for a post-lunch buzz. Now, this “super food” has found its way out of the backward alleys of hipster civilization and into Oprah’s kitchen! In one of Oprah’s show ” 10 Foods for Age-Defying Beauty”, they listed acai berry as the number one super food saying, “This little berry is one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the world. It can often be found in juice form in health food and gourmet stores.”
The claimed benefits are:
-Increased Energy
-Resistance to colds/flu
-Healthy and more youthful skin
-Improved eyesight
-Improved circulation
-Prevention of degenerate diseases
-Slowing of the aging process
-Promotion of weight loss
Didn’t your momma tell you there’s no such thing as a magic berry, though? The truth is that it tastes delicious and is loaded with antioxidants – but will only make you gorgeous and thin if part of a balanced health regime. (If you use it to wash down a donut, good luck!)

As a parent, one of my goals during the holiday season is to get a couple items from each of my kids Christmas lists to put under the tree. This year was a bit different… both wrote what seemed to be the never-ending list. They added on to it until it was time to put them in the mailbox and send to Santa and his elves! There were definitely some big ticket items on the lists this year. We were lucky however that both lists had a couple items in common. They both wanted games for their Nintendo Wii. At the top of the list were Wii Fit and Guitar Hero - not easy gifts to find this holiday season! After calling 4 local gaming stores in the area on a daily basis for 2 weeks straight (not to mention some help from some fearless colleagues) we were able to locate a Wii Fit. My in-laws were able to find Guitar Hero.
On Christmas morning the kids were excited and pleased when they opened the gifts! The whole family was impressed by the Wii fit system. The tracking and the technology in this “game” was really cool. We all took turns setting up our profiles over the weekend and playing a variety of balance games etc. We will definitely incorporate the Wii Fit in our weekly fitness routine. I think it’s going to be easy to fit it in our schedule in between playdates and sports schedules. After all, it’s convenient – right in our own living room!
Later in the day, they opened Guitar Hero and the family enjoyed battles to rock bands that I enjoyed as a kid! As I played, something strange began to occur (strange for me – a ”non-gamer”) I didn’t want to put down the guitar. I was excited for my next turn… After the kids were all tucked into bed that night, I picked up the guitar and was determined to beat my last score to “unlock” the next level! It was so much fun! I’m slowly growing an addition. So if you see my hair teased high or you see me out sporting my black leather coat and high heel boots… you now know my secret!
