As a makeup artist with 13 years industry experience in New Zealand, London and Hong Kong, Krystina Te Kanawa knows her stuff! She has worked in various areas of the industry, including TV (CNN, CNBC), magazines (Elle, HK Tatler), luxury brands (Veuve Cliquot, Moet Hennessy), global sporting events (London 2012 Olympics), charity events, gala balls, weddings and birthdays, but finds that the majority of ladies struggle with the same makeup problems.  In Hong Kong, keeping makeup looking fresh and radiant in the heat, humidity and pollution is one of the biggest challenges.  Here are Krystina’s top 5 make up tips for beating the Hong Kong summer!

Tip #1: Base

Less is more in the heat. Get savvy and invest in products that are multi-functional. For your base, use a moisturiser that contains SPF protection. Krystina loves Clinique Super City Blocker SPF 40, as it is lightweight, oil-free and packed with anti-oxidants to protect your skin from the nasty Hong Kong air pollutants!

Note: Apply a thin layer to your face, making sure you rub it in thoroughly, as it does have a slight tint of colour to it.

Tip #2: Primer

Yes, this is an extra layer for your skin, but if you feel your makeup slides off and disappears by lunchtime, then investing in a great primer is key to longevity. Krystina recommends two brands of primer: (1) Laura Mercier has an amazing range of primers that target specific skin types. (2) Hour Glass Veil Mineral Primer, is on the pricier side, but is mineral based and well suited to oily and sensitive skin types.

Note: Apply your primer after your moisturizer, leaving 2-3 minutes between each product in order to allow them to settle into your skin.

Tip #3: Foundation

Use a foundation that is long wearing to ensure your makeup lasts the distance.  Some brands advertise that their products last up to 27 hours! Estee Lauder has a great selection of long wearing foundations under their Double Wear range.

Note: Long wearing foundations will dry matte, so you don't need powder. If a matte finish isn't your thing, then just add a drop of moisturizer or highlighter to your foundation to give your base a touch of dewiness.

Tip #4: Mascara

Water proof mascara . . . eek! It can be a pain to remove, but that's the whole point, right? If your mascara tends to smudge around your eye area in the Hong Kong humidity, then waterproof mascara will be your new best friend!

Note: Try purchasing mascara that is tube formulated.  It will come off a lot easier, but still have excellent staying power. Krystina recommends DHC.

Tip #5: Lips

Long lasting lipsticks are great if you don’t want to have to re-apply during the day. Whilst there are many products on the market, Krystina has recently been loving the Urban Decay Vice Lipsticks comfort matte range.

Note: Long lasting formulas can be drying. Make sure you prep your lips with a moisturizing lip balm, with an additional layer of balm after you've applied your lipstick for extra slip.
