With men now seeking out the services of waxing more than ever, we set aside some MeTime at Bare Esthetics HQ to get the lowdown on Boyzillians and all things male waxing! Meet the founder, Jyoti Cheung, a former nurse who’s great at putting people at ease - it’s no wonder over 30% of her clientele are males!

What do most of your male clients get waxed?

Boyzillians, back, chest and stomach and legs

Can you describe the waxing process?

First we will apply an antiseptic lotion to the area and trim the hair being waxed (if it’s too long). A test strip will be waxed, to gauge your skin's reaction to the waxing process. If all is ok warm wax will then be applied, two sections at a time, and removed quickly.  To finish we will apply antiseptic lotion to the whole area before applying moisturizer.

What is the pain like?

The first time is obviously more painful but usually people find the pain bearable because it doesn't last long.

How regularly do men need to see you?

Men should come once every 4-6 weeks. The best length to do waxing is at 2-3mm as the hair follicles will be the smallest and less painful.

What can first timers to waxing do to be prepared?

Apply enough moisturizer leading up to your appointment so the skin won't be too dry during waxing. And, try to relax.

How do you help a nervous client?

We can apply a few drops of Bach Flower Remedies under the customers' tongue. It helps calm them down and feel a bit more relaxed. We also provide a squishy toy to help release the tension.

What are you thinking when you are performing waxing treatment and is it ever awkward for him or for you?

If the customer looks really nervous, I always try to distract them by talking about something else. As a former nurse I never feel awkward.  I’m very experienced in male waxing and I have two to three male customers everyday. Male waxing is a part of my job and most of the time I'm thinking of the waxing procedures. My male clients tend to feel like they are seeing a doctor when they are getting a treatment with me.

Are there any DON’Ts before and after waxing customers should note?

Stop shaving or tweezing at least two weeks prior

Don't go under the sun one week before waxing

If you are using any topical creams that contain Accutane, Retin A, Renova, Differin or taking other types of skin thinning acne medications, it’s best to consult with your dermatologist before the treatment. Individuals do react differently to these medications

You must wait a minimum of seven days before waxing after a light chemical peel or Microdermabrasion

Waxing cannot be performed if you have been in a tanning booth the same day.

Waxing cannot be performed if you have had laser skin resurfacing within the past year.

No hot baths for 24 hours following a body waxing treatment.

No rubbing area for 24 hours following a waxing treatment.

Bare Esthetics’ top 5 benefits of male waxing

1. Less body odor – Body hair absorbs perspiration and if the hair is removed, body odor cannot be absorbed and retained.

2. Better performance – waxing is popular amongst swimmers and athletes. It is also easier to dry off after a swim.

3.Waxing removes dead skin cells – making skin appear younger and rejuvenated. Most waxes already come with moisturizers to help soften the skin prior to the removal of hair. Waxing also uproots the entire hair down to its root preventing stubbles to occur so less chance of ingrown hairs to appear.

4. After waxing, hair regrowth will be finer. With regular body waxing for men, hair growth will reduce as waxing weakens the hair follicles.

5. Less pain – The more you wax, the less pain you will feel.

Thank you to Jyoti from Bare Esthetics for the great information, be sure to arrange an appointment for all your waxing needs!
