Creating a Spa Experience at Home

As busy women, moms, entrepreneurs (or maybe all of the above!), we know that it is important to have me-time, but do we know why? Taking time away to pamper yourself is critical for physical, mental and emotional health. Otherwise, the stress of juggling so many responsibilities can lead to health problems including migraines, anxiety, high blood pressure and heart disease. In order to reduce stress and recharge your batteries, you should regularly set aside me-time.

How can you get me-time at home? Turn it into a luxurious spa retreat! This can easily be done, and affordably too – for much less than you’d spend booking an appointment at a spa. Here are some steps to creating your own spa oasis at home:

  • First, gather your supplies: towels, candles, music, bath products and lotion.
  • Close the bathroom door, and place a rolled up towel along the base of the door to block out noise if others are at home.
  • Light some candles. Aromatherapy candles are best – look for ones that use essential oils of lavender, chamomile, marjoram or bergamot, all of these oils are used for their ability to encourage relaxation.
  • Play soothing music – I recommend instrumental music, so that your mind can simply drift and not be distracted by song lyrics.
  • Run warm (not hot) bath water and add bubble bath, bath fizzies, milk bath or tub tea to soften and soothe skin. Soak in the tub and relax. You can place a sleep mask over your eyes to promote further relaxation, but remember it is never safe to fall asleep in the bathtub.
  • Follow your bath soak with lotion to lock moisture into your skin. You can also use a lotion bar or massage oil. Simply massage your temples, shoulders, feet, or any place on your body that still feels tense, or you can have a partner give you a massage.
  • If you have time, lay down and do some deep breathing, meditation or relaxation.

Creating your own spa at home is a wonderful way to enjoy a little me time. You’ll emerge with fresh, glowing skin, a clear head, and a renewed sense of energy.
