When it comes to identifying our own needs and taking care of ourselves, a lot of us moms have a very difficult time with this. I know this was a real struggle for me, especially early on in my years of mothering.
When I first became a mom, I can recall devoting every ounce of energy I had to my new baby. That’s what most of us do, right? Well, this trend continued for some time until I found my reserves running dry. Certainly it was understandable to make my daughter the priority, but what didn’t make a lot of sense was that I completely took myself off my list. My intention was to give the greatest care possible to my child, but ultimately I was no longer able to provide that because I reached a point where I really had very little left to give.
It was at this time that I realized I needed to put myself back into the picture. What was interesting, though, and I hear this from other moms a lot, is that I found myself waiting for someone else to give me permission to address my own needs. What was that about? Why was I deferring responsibility for my self-care to someone “out there”?

So, I finally gave myself permission to figure out what I needed and to carve out space in my life for this. Once I decided that I was worthy of this time and attention, then I did need to ask for support in helping to bring this about. But the request for support comes after we make the decision to put ourselves on our lists.
If you find that you’re struggling with implementing your own self-care, take some time to determine what’s holding you back. Perhaps you’ve been waiting for someone else’s permission, too. The good news is that you no longer have to wait. Make the decision that you’re valuable and that you deserve some of your own attention. Give yourself the permission that you’ve been waiting for.
