Part 2 of 4
O.K., so now that you know what the things during “me-time” look like (as discussed in part 1 – Me Time | Know what it looks like) let’s talk about how to make it happen! Were you able to squeak one of your ‘items’ in over the past 7 days? If not, what stood in the way? Most often the answer to that questions is “MY LIFE!”
Here is where we find our next step! Setting the actual time aside is much easier said than done – yet, not impossible!
As you evaluate the coming week ask yourself the following questions:
- Who needs what?
- When do these things need to be accomplished by?
- Do I HAVE to be the one to do it?
- Where are my time wasters?
- Where are my pockets of time?

Example: “As I prepare for each week I’m looking for the things that must get done – like going to work, transportation for the kids, making dinner, volunteer responsibilities, etc. Once I have all that planned into my calendar/planner I evaluate what should get done this week – like grocery shopping, paying bills, laundry, research projects, etc. Finally, I determine what I’d like to do this week – like hang out with my kids, catch up with my girlfriends, chat with my grandma, read a good book, etc.
Some time wasters in my schedule tend to be phone calls so I often utilize email as much as possible. Another time waster can be the internet, so I’m sure to sit down with a goal or a list when I go surfing (or a timer!)
Pockets of time begin to appear when I’ve evaluated the week ahead (or even sometimes the month!) by simply plugging everything in & realizing others can help me out. Then, I schedule in the “me-time”.
When I see that Wednesday afternoon doesn’t have anything scheduled yet, I plug in ‘play board game with kids‘. Now it’s an item on the calendar, which makes it something we are going to do. If someone wants/needs something Wednesday afternoon we can all say “No, sorry, I already have plans” instead of the usual “Oh, that looks open, OK”. Moving the things you want to do up on the priority list and actually scheduling them in will help you to start fitting them in.”
Me-Time Assignment:
- Evaluate your week ahead
- Plug-in/Schedule at least TWO things you want to do for this week
Next week: Re-Fueling
