Cynergy Lasers

People with leg veins, rosacea, and other vascular and pigmented lesions can benefit from a state-of-the-art MultiPlex laser called Cynergy. Continue reading to learn more about this treatment and how it could benefit you.

What is Cynergy laser?

Cynergy is the first laser system that combines a pulse-dye laser and a powerful Nd:YAG laser into one platform. This innovative device is powered by Cynosure's MultiPlex technology, an advanced technology that is more effective than conventional single-wavelength lasers.

The dual wavelengths in Cynergy offer better absorption and penetration. Melanin pigment and blood absorb both wavelengths, making the laser effective against both pigmented and vascular lesions. What's more, the treatment is synergistic because the pulsed dye laser penetrates less while the Nd:YAG penetrates further down.

What is MultiPlex? Why is it better?

Cynergy treats vascular and pigmented lesions more effectively with very few side effects. This is made possible by Cynosure’s revolutionary MultiPlex technology. MultiPlex technology enables the sequential emission of two wavelengths of laser energy with precise timing from one handpiece. This includes a pulse-dye 585 nm beam and an Nd:YAG 1064 nm beam. Providers can customize the treatment for short, medium, long, or extended delays between the beams. Cynergy is the first system to combine these two wavelengths for improved outcomes after treatment of all types of pigmented and vascular lesions.

The proprietary MultiPlex technology enables 75% clearance of lesions with a single treatment in 3 out of 4 patients with facial telangiectasia with little to no side effects such as purpura. MultiPlex also improves leg veins and has been shown to improve outcomes in patients with stubborn vascular birthmarks. The technology allows providers to offer laser treatment for lesions that previously could only be treated with surgery.

What does Cynergy treat?

The Cynergy workstation treats vascular and pigmented lesions, including rosacea, facial and leg telangiectasias, spider veins, hemangiomas, blebbed and mature port wine stains, scars, and warts. As a laser emitting dual wavelengths, Cynergy delivers unparalleled efficacy with minimal side effects. It is proven safe and effective for use in children.

How does Cynergy work on vascular and pigmented lesions?

Cynergy’s pulsed-dye laser fires milliseconds before the Nd:YAG laser. The first laser beam converts oxy-hemoglobin to methemoglobin. This increases the absorption of the Nd:YAG wavelength by 300 to 500%. Therefore, when the Nd:YAG laser fires sequentially, it is more effectively absorbed by the target lesion, enabling reduced Nd:YAG fluence because of better absorption efficiency, which in turn leads to improved patient safety.

The dual wavelengths work synergistically to achieve greater depth penetration, resulting in better outcomes and safe and effective results. The procedure time is less than conventional single wavelength platforms, which means greater comfort and satisfaction for patients.

What is the gold standard for laser treatment of vascular lesions?

The 585 nm pulsed dye laser is the gold standard for laser vascular treatment. It has been in clinical use for more than three decades. This wavelength is excellent at selectively targeting blood and has a low risk of collateral damage. The penetration depth of this laser beam makes it ideal to treat smaller vessels. The dual wavelengths Cynergy provides this gold standard wavelength with an Nd:YAG 1064 nm beam for even better results, treating many types of skin lesions more effectively than conventional single wavelength systems.

Key advantages of Cynergy

Two wavelengths from one delivery system are used to treat vascular lesions. The 585 nm pulse-dye laser is the gold standard for port wine stains, broken blood vessels, scars, and rosacea. The 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser is effective against larger facial and leg veins. Cynergy therefore treats both pigmented and vascular lesions more effectively and in less time than single wavelength systems.

The sequential MultiPlex technology in this vascular workstation is more effective than single-wavelength technology. Greater penetration depth is achieved. There is less Nd:YAG fluence for enhanced patient safety. These features allow the treatment to be customized to the patient's needs, including customizing the delay between laser pulse delivery.

Cynergy is a versatile system that ensures optimal treatment parameters. As a result, patients experience fewer side effects. Cynergy virtually eliminates purpura, a type of bruising commonly seen with older pulse-dye lasers. The risk of scarring is also dramatically lower with Cynergy.

What side effects can occur?

As with any treatment, there is a risk of side effects with Cynergy. Patients typically experience some temporary redness of the skin in the treatment area. Scarring is rare, but can occur after any laser procedure. There can be blistering in the first few days after the procedure, especially if there is sun exposure. Patients are advised to care for a blistered area by keeping it moist and applying an ointment until it heals. Some patients develop irritation in the skin (papules) but this usually subsides in a few hours. Higher energy settings can cause scabbing. Temporary pigmentary changes may also occur after Cynergy treatments.
