Emervel Injectables

With age, most people develop fine lines and wrinkles in the facial skin. There is also a loss of facial volume in the cheeks and other facial features. Some sagging or looseness of facial tissue can occur. Treatment with a cosmetic filler can lift and fill the affected areas of the facial structure, thus restoring a smoother, softer, and more youthful appearance to the face. One such new hyaluronic acid filler is called Emervel. Please continue reading to learn more about this dermal filler designed to restore volume and treat the common signs of facial aging.

What causes wrinkles?

Wrinkles form in the skin due to various reasons. As we grow older, there is a loss of collagen and elastin in the skin, resulting in the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Deeper wrinkles form due to volume loss and sagging of facial tissues or due to repeated contraction of the facial muscles during facial expressions like laughing, smiling, and frowning.

Static wrinkles that form due to the effects of age and gravity are treated differently from dynamic wrinkles that form due to facial muscle contraction. A range of cosmetic treatments is available to for different types of wrinkles, including hyaluronic acid fillers like Emervel, botulinum toxin injections (Azzalure, Botox), and surgical correction with facelift surgery.

What is Emervel?

Emervel is a range of advanced, highly effective, safe, and clinically-proven hyaluronic acid fillers. It is used for the treatment of moderate to severe facial lines, volume loss, facial contouring, and lip enhancement.

The Emervel range of dermal fillers was first made commercially available in 2011 in the UK, European, and South American markets. In 2016, the Emervel range from Galderma was integrated with the Restylane range to create a single large range of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers designed for both deep and superficial filling. Emervel as a brand name ceased to exist and all products were rebranded as Restylane.

The makers of the dermal filler brand Restylane / Emervel also make the botulinum toxin brand Azzalure.

What does it contain?

The active ingredient in Emervel is hyaluronic acid. This is a naturally occurring substance found in large quantities in human skin. In Emervel / Restylane products, the hyaluronic acid is mixed with a substance called butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDDE) to cross link and form a gel. The BDDE is later removed through a purification process. The hyaluronic acid in Emervel of non-animal origin. The products are made using bacterial fermentation and a biotechnological process.

What makes Emervel so effective?

Enervel is made using an innovation manufacturing technology called Optimal Balance Technology which gives it a gel texture. This allows Emervel fillers to integrate fully into the appropriate skin layer. The result is that there is better skin tolerance and longer-lasting results after dermal filler work with Emervel.

Various factors like the particle size and level of cross linking in the hyaluronic acid gel affect the duration of results from a face filler. Emervel has four levels of cross-linking across the range of products. Products with lower levels of cross-linking are softer gels that are used to perform superficial injections. Products with higher levels of cross-linking are firmer gels that are used for deeper injections. Also, products with smaller particle size are injected superficially while those with larger particle sizes are suitable for deeper skin application. The concentration of hyaluronic acid is the same across all the products in the Emervel range, including Emervel Volume, Emervel Classic, Emervel Touch, and Emervel Deep.

How does Emervel work?

As mentioned, Emervel contains a natural substance called hyaluronic acid which fills deep and superficial wrinkles, replaces lost volume, and lifts and tightens facial tissues to give you a rejuvenated appearance. The Optimal Balance Technology used to make Emervel allows the gel to be designed as a soft gel or firm gel, which can be injected into different layers of the skin for various purposes, such as to correct mild facial lines, treat wrinkles, fill moderate nasolabial folds, or reduce other visible signs of aging in the treatment area.

What is Emervel (Restylane Defyne)?

It is a hyaluronic acid filler from the range previously called Emervel that is used to correct moderate to severe deep facial wrinkles, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and smile lines. This product is designed to fill and plump up deep lines and wrinkles and to restore volume under the skin's surface. Defyne contains lidocaine, which is a local anesthetic, to reduce discomfort during the treatment.

What is Emervel (Restylane Refyne)?

This particular product is injected into the mid-to-deep dermis to treat moderate wrinkles and folds, fill deep wrinkles and deep nasolabial folds, treat smile lines as well as lift sagging facial tissue. Restylane Refyne contains lidocaine, which is a local anesthetic, to improve the discomfort associated with injections into the subcutaneous tissue.

What is Emervel (Restylane Volyme)?

This product was initially introduced as part of a clinical trial and later commercially. It is a hyaluronic acid gel dermal filler that is a part of the Restylane / Emervel line of dermal fillers. It complements the other products in the line, Refyne and Defyne. The Restylane Volyme dermal filler works by replacing hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin, that is reduced with aging. Volyme is used to contour the cheeks, chin, and jaw during facial rejuvenation.

Results and recovery from Emervel

Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers work by pulling water to the treated area and giving the skin a hydrated, smooth, soft appearance. The treated area can become slightly irritated and swollen for 2-3 days before you see the results of your filler injections. The final result is usually visible 1-2 weeks after the treatment.

There is no real downtime and you can drive yourself home after your appointment and resume all normal activities.

How long do results of Restylane Emervel last?

The results of Emervel / Restylane last for a time frame ranging from 9 months to 15 months depending on the product used, the depth of injection, and your metabolism. Therefore, the results are long-lasting but not permanent. You will need to return for repeat treatments periodically after the initial injection if you want to maintain your results.

Are Emervel dermal fillers safe?

Emervel Classic, Emervel Touch, Emervel Volume, and Emervel Deep were tested prior to commercial marketing and later re-branded as Restylane. They were compared to other hyaluronic acid fillers available and checked for safety and efficacy. The fillers were evaluated extensively in Europe through randomized, double-blind, multicenter, split-face, active controlled, and comparative clinical trials. The clinical studies did not report any serious adverse events after injections of dermal fillers.

What are the reported side effects?

The most common side effects from filler injections include injection site pain, redness, swelling, and itching. Very rarely, there can be an infection or allergic reaction. Irregularities in the filling can occur occasionally.
