Vbeam Prima
Vbeam Prima® is a pulsed-dye laser (PDL) that is used to treat pigmented lesions, certain non-pigmented lesions, and benign vascular lesions. This laser uses a combination of two wavelengths - 595nm and 1064nm - which gives it a lot of versatility, making it a favorite of healthcare providers who run a skin surgery center. The Vbeam Prima is well tolerated by patients due to its cooling mist system. It has a well established safety profile and is associated with a low incidence of side effects. What is Vbeam Prima?
As mentioned, Vbeam is a type of pulsed dye laser (PDL). It is the gold standard in treating skin lesions related to blood vessels. This can include things like rosacea, port wine stains, and spider veins. The treatment area can be the face or any part of the body. The Vbeam laser has been FDA-approved for over two decades now. The new generation version is called the Vbeam Prima laser. Some of the key features of this laser are listed below.
Two Wavelengths
The dual wavelength Vbeam Prima is very versatile with many treatment parameters and a broad range of indications. It is essentially two lasers in one.
The 595 nm wavelength penetrates deep into the skin and targets blood vessels. The laser energy is absorbed by oxyhemoglobin in the blood. This allows the Vbeam laser to clear vessels. Yet, there is very little melanin absorption, which means adequate skin protection and protection of surrounding tissue. The result is high patient tolerability with fewer instances of side effects.
The Vbeam Prima laser system has an additional 1064 nm wavelength that is ideal for treating larger and deeper vessels, such as those found in venous lakes and blue veins. It is also effective against wrinkles.
Large Spot Size
The large (15 mm) spot size of the Vbeam Prima system means doctors can achieve results in less time, which means fast and efficient treatments at a skin surgery center.
Two Skin Protection Systems
The Vbeam Prima has two cooling systems to protect the skin. The Dynamic Cooling Device™ (DCD™) is a cryogen-based system that protects the skin. The EverCool™ contact cooling system allows doctors to treat pigmented and vascular lesions at the same time.
Zoom Handpiece
The handpiece of the Vbeam Prima device allows the laser energy to reach targeted blood vessels precisely. Doctors can adjust the spot size by 0.5 mm at a time for added precision.
How does Vbeam Prima work?
The Vbeam Prima selectively targets blood in blood vessels without affecting the surrounding skin. This makes it very effective in treating skin conditions that involve blood vessels.
What does the Vbeam® Prima device treat?
The new Vbeam Prima device can be used on nearly any part of the face or body. The system is designed to treat rosacea, port wine stains, birthmarks, angiomas, spider angiomas, hemangiomas, facial and leg telangiectasia, venous lakes, deep blue veins, benign pigmented lesions, inflammatory acne vulgaris, fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, scars, red colored stretch marks, poikiloderma (photodamaged skin), and other benign skin lesions.
Who is a candidate for Vbeam laser?
Anyone with the above-mentioned skin conditions may be a good candidate for Vbeam Prima.
What is the Vbeam laser treatment like?
Doctors use a topical or local anesthesia prior to the pulsed dye laser (PDL) treatment. The Vbeam Prima handpiece is used to deliver laser energy directly to the area, for example, areas with port wine stains or spider veins. The treatment sessions typically last 15-20 minutes. This can vary depending on the condition and area being treated.
Are Vbeam Prima treatments painful?
Vbeam® Prima laser therapy is non-invasive and causes minimal discomfort. The in-built contact cooling handpiece ensures optimal comfort. Most patients treated with this laser reported an average pain score of 1-2. In general, patients reported feeling a mild heating sensation when the gentle burst of light pulses is applied to the skin to treat conditions like port wine stains.
When will I start seeing results from pulsed dye laser treatment?
You will see an initial improvement immediately after Vbeam Prima with a reduction in visible pigmented or vascular lesions. However, the full results will be visible in 1-2 weeks.
How long do Vbeam results last?
The results are long-lasting, based on clinical trials. This is because lasers like Vbeam Prima treat the blood vessels and pigmented lesions by eliminating them. These lesions are therefore unlikely to return. However, new veins can develop over time, for which you may need additional treatment with a pulsed dye laser.
How many treatments will I need?
Most patients can achieve full results with a single treatment. Some lesions may require more than one Vbeam Prima session to achieve the best outcome. Your dermatologist or plastic surgeon will give you an estimate of the number of treatments needed.
Is it safe? Can Vbeam damage your skin?
Mild swelling and redness is expected for 1-2 days. There can also be some skin darkening and bruising after treating redness or birthmarks.
The Vbeam Prima device is safe. It is FDA approved for treatment of vascular lesions and visible veins. Thousands of patients have undergone these treatments safely.
Is there any downtime?
There is minimal downtime after Vbeam Prima treatment. Most patients can resume normal daily activities the same day. The side effects like mild swelling and redness are usually short-lived.
How much does Vbeam Prima cost?
The cost of Vbeam Prima treatment depends on the area and size of the lesion being treated. On average, one session costs $400 to $800.
